Bhutan airport
The only airport in Bhutan is particularly nerve-wracking. According to a 2009 Travel + Leisure article, "Tucked into a tightly cropped valley and surrounded by 16,000-foot-high serrated Himalayan peaks, this is arguably the world's most forbidding airport to fly into. It requires specially trained pilots to maneuver into this stomach-dropping aerie by employing visual flying rules and then approaching and landing through a narrow channel of vertiginous tree-covered hillsides."

Final approach into Catalina Airport in California. Construction on the airport was completed in 1946, before which Catalina Island was accessible only to amphibious aircraft. The runway was built by blasting away the tops of two mountains and using the 200,000 truckloads of rock to fill the gap between them.

Queenstown airport
The site airfarewatchdog.com describes the Queenstown airport in New Zealand: " It lies below The Remarkables, a jagged mountain range seen in 'The Lord of the Rings.' On descent, passengers may feel a sudden drop in altitude caused by strong downdrafts. Bird activity by the runway, as well as frequent bad weather and visibility, also make Queenstown Airport a real knee-knocker."
